Easy Homemade Granola
My mother in law shared this easy homemade granola recipe with us, and it’s so good. I love how it’s salty and sweet and it is loaded with big chunky clusters of goodness. My favorite part is the Wheaties cereal. If you’ve never made homemade granola, you need to! Granola is one of those things that is so much better made at home than store bought. Plus you really can customize it to your preference. You can make healthier swaps if you prefer and add in so many different mix-ins to make it your own.
Ingredients:
- 4 cups old fashioned oats
- 4 cups Wheaties cereal (we’ve tried it with Total cereal too)
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 cup sliced almonds
- 1/2 cup coconut flakes
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans *optional
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
How to make this easy Homemade Granola:
- Preheat oven to 300 F.
- On a sheet pan mix together the oats, Wheaties, sliced almonds and coconut.
- Sprinkle the salt, brown sugar and cinnamon over the top of the oat mixture.
- In a small sauce pan heat the oil, honey and vanilla until the honey melts and is easy to stir.
- Pour the oil honey mixture all over the oat mixture and stir with a rubber spatula well to coat.
- Gently spread the mixture evenly on the pan.
- Bake for 40 minutes.
- Every 10 minutes take the pan out of the oven and gently stir it around to ensure all pieces are coated with the oil/honey and so that they all toast evenly.
- Remove from the oven after 40 minutes of baking and let it cool on the pan.
- When cooled to room temperature break into smaller pieces.
-Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 month.
Basic Granola has these simple ingredients:
Oats:
We always use old fashioned oats for this recipe. We don’t recommend quick oats.
Nuts and or Seeds:
You can really customize your granola with a variety of nuts and or seeds like: almonds, pecans, walnuts, pistachios and sunflower seeds
Oil:
There are a few different ways to go with the oil, you can opt for coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil for a healthier option if you prefer. We are using vegetable oil, but use whichever kind of oil you prefer.
Sweetener:
There are two kinds of sweetener in this granola: honey and brown sugar. You can easily take out the brown sugar and just use a natural sweetener like honey. You can also easily swap maple syrup with honey.
Salt and Spice:
The salt and the cinnamon in this recipe adds so much flavor. We love the salty sweet combination of this granola
Optional Mix-ins:
- dried fruit
- dried berries
- dried cherries
- raisins
- dried cranberries
- dried mango
- dried apricots
How to Serve Granola:
Serve with the yogurt of your choice and fresh berries. You can even enjoy it with milk like regular cereal. Some like to add chocolate chips. The options are really endless.
How to make Granola with Big Chunky Clusters:
- To achieve big clumpy chunks of granola: crowd your oats together in a smaller-ish pan for more chances to stick together.
- Gently press the granola down into the pan after every time you stir it together to ensure it to stick together.
- After baking let the granola cool completely to room temp on the pan before breaking it up into smaller chunks.
Granola Breakfast Bar:
A great way to feed a crowd breakfast is to set out a granola breakfast bar. Set out a big glass bowl of the granola for easy serving, a variety of different yogurts to choose from and a bunch of toppings. Here are some of the toppings that we love:
- blueberries
- raspberries
- sliced strawberries
- black berries
- chocolate chips
- more nuts and seeds
