One of our favorite recipes for leftover ham: Scalloped Potatoes and Ham.
One of my favorite make ahead dinners is this scalloped potatoes and ham bake. It’s a must when you have leftover ham, like after the holidays or a big family get together. It’s warm and cheesy and pure comfort food. The best part is that you can make it in the morning or the night before and bake it when you’re ready! We shared an awesome list of 25+ different recipe ideas for ways to use leftover ham, and I’m excited to try so many of them!
Ingredients needed to make Scalloped Potatoes and Ham:
- 5 potatoes peeled
- 8-10 slices ham
- 3 cups grated cheese cheddar or mozzarella works great here
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 eggs
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 teaspoon pepper
How to make Scalloped Potatoes and Ham
- Preheat oven to 350°F
- Slice the peeled potatoes and keep in water to avoid browning.
- Season the potatoes with salt and pepper, tossing them to make sure they’re coated.
- In a greased, square baking dish layer the potatoes, ham and cheese and repeat this layer
- pattern until you run out of ingredients for each layer or you almost reach the top.
- Top with more cheese on the final layer.
- In a small bowl, mix the heavy cream and eggs. Pour on top of the shredded cheese.
- Bake for about 40 minutes, until the cheese is golden brown.
- Cool slightly, slice and serve!
How to store Scalloped Potatoes and Ham:
You can store Scalloped Potatoes and Ham in the pan you baked them in, covered with a lid or plastic wrap. Just keep it in the fridge and they will keep up to 5 days!
Tips and Tricks:
- After peeling: After you peel and slice all the potatoes, keep them under water so they don’t discolor.
- Season your potatoes: Make sure the potato slices are seasoned with salt and pepper on all sides.
- Wait to serve: Allow the dish to sit for 5-10 minutes out of the oven will make it so easy to cut and serve.
Do you need to peel your potatoes for Scalloped Potatoes?
We think Scalloped Potatoes with Ham taste better when the potatoes are peeled, but if you like leaving the skin on potatoes go right ahead and leave the potato skin on!
Difference between Scalloped and Au Gratin Potatoes:
While the two dishes are very similar, Scalloped Potatoes are usually sliced thicker, and are easier to make!
Adding ham to Scalloped Potatoes:
These Scalloped Potatoes are a great use of leftover ham. The creamy cheese sauce goes really well with ham. If you don’t have any ham, just make regular scalloped potatoes without the ham. They will still be so delicious without it.
