Feed a crowd with this delicious Creamy Crock Pot Hot Chocolate.
When it comes to feeding a crowd, the slow cooker aka crock pot is such a big help! Slow cooker or crockpot…whatever you call it, this recipe for creamy hot chocolate made in your crockpot is the best you’ll ever have. Forget the dry powder hot cocoa mix and go right for the good stuff.
What you need to make Creamy Crockpot Hot Chocolate:
- milk
- heavy cream
- sweetened condensed milk
- milk chocolate chips
- vanilla
How to make Creamy Crockpot Hot Chocolate:
- Combine ingredients: Add all ingredients to your crock pot set to low for 2 hours. Stir every 10 minutes or so to make sure it’s well combined. Once all the chocolate chips are melted turn it down to the warm setting.
- Optional: You could also set the crockpot to high for less time and stir more frequently. Once all the chocolate is melted you can turn the crockpot down to warm.
How to store Creamy Crockpot Hot Chocolate:
If you’re lucky enough to have any of this creamy goodness leftover, you can store it in an airtight container, or glass jars. You can reheat it on the stove or in the microwave when you’re ready to serve again.
Chocolate chips for hot chocolate:
The recipe is really simple. I’ve made this with milk chocolate chips and semisweet chocolate chips for a more decadent chocolate flavor. I love using Guittard brand milk chocolate chips…they are the best!
Hot Chocolate too sweet?
If you are wanting a more rich hot chocolate with less sweetness, we recommend using a semi sweet chocolate chip rather than milk chocolate chip. You could even try mixing the two to find your perfect level of sweetness.
Hot Chocolate Topping Ideas:
There are so many fun things to top hot cocoa with! To name a few:
- Marshmallows
- Whipped cream
- Crushed peppermint candy canes
- Caramel drizzle
- Chocolate drizzle
- Toffee bits
- Cute cool whip shapes
What’s your favorite way to top hot chocolate?
Benefit of using the crockpot for hot chocolate:
Using the crockpot is so great for feeding a crowd because it stays warm with no effort. No one likes cooled down hot chocolate, and you can avoid that with this method. It really is great in maintaining the perfect temp while allowing you to enjoy the party. No one wants to babysit a pot of hot cocoa.

That’s it! Next time you want a warm cup of creamy hot cocoa, make this and let me know what you think in the comments below!

Yum! How many people do you think this would serve?
Not sure. It’s pretty rich, so portion sizes can be smaller. Maybe 8 – 12 people.
Thanks and Merry Christmas!
What size crockpot did you use for this?
I don’t know exact measurements. It’s not the small one. I would say it’s on the large size…but not the largest size. Sorry I’m not much help.
Do you know if there is any way of keeping the leftovers and putting it in the fridge and warm it back up when you want more?
Sure! I think it would be fine.
How many servings does the crock pot hot cocoa serve?
It varies…but it’s about 6-8 servings…depending on the sizes.
How many servings does the crock pot cocoa recipe make?
What kind of milk would you recommend? 2%, Skim, etc.? This looks yummy and easy. Having some ladies over for a PJ Christmas Party and plan to do a hot chocolate bar. Thanks!
Hi Elizabeth! I wouldn’t go lower than 1%. 2% would be great!
Thank you so much for the advice. Can’t wait to try this!

Do you know if I could keep this on the “keep warm” setting overnight, after it cooks? I want to make it for my daughters classroom party in the morning, but I don’t want to wake up super early to make it 🙂
Hi Ali! I would not. I would just make it quick the morning of on your stove top over medium high heat and then transfer it to your slow cooker to keep it warm for serving. I worry about milk out overnight.
I’m making this for my mops group tomorrow morning. I was going to make it now, put in fridge and then reheat in the morning. Do you think that’ll work?
Hi Becky! Yes that will work great!
can this be made on top of stove.
Hi Mary! Yes! Of Course!
We have made this the last two winters. It is a favorite for my kids, and we make it multiple times a year – especially on Christmas and New Years! We do use semi-sweet chocolate, as I found milk chocolate to make it too rich for our liking. Semi sweet has been perfect. Great recipe, and definitely a family tradition for us.
Thanks for the suggestion! So happy your family loves it! I will have to try it with semi sweet!
