Homemade Buttermilk Syrup is so buttery and sweet and it will take your family breakfast up a notch.
One of our family favorite breakfasts is german pancakes with buttermilk syrup. The homemade buttermilk syrup takes it to the next level. It’s so creamy and delicious and really easy to make.
What you need to make Buttermilk Syrup:
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 Tablespoons corn syrup
- 1/2 cup butter or margarine
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
How to make buttermilk syrup:
- In a large pot, bring to a boil the first four ingredients: buttermilk, sugar, butter, and corn syrup.
- Stirring constantly over medium high heat until well combined.
- Remove from heat. Add in the baking soda. The baking soda will have a chemical reaction with the buttermilk, and it will bubble up big. Having it off the heat and stirring constantly will help it not boil over.
- Finish by stirring in the vanilla. Let the bubble deflate and give it a few stirs before serving.
- Serve warm over pancakes, waffles, french toast and our favorite: german pancakes.
Buttermilk Substitutes:
If you don’t have buttermilk at home, no problem.
For 1 cup buttermilk, try these simple substitutes:
- 1 cup whole milk with 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 1 cup whole milk with 1 tablespoon white vinegar
- 1/2 cup sour cream with 1/2 cup water
- 3/4 cup plain unsweetened yogurt with 1/4 water or milk
We made a little video (see below) to show just how easy it is to make buttermilk syrup at home. It makes a great food gift to give to family and friends. If you pick up a quart of buttermilk at the store, you’ll use the whole thing when you quadruple this syrup recipe. I’m always so glad when I do, it’s nice to be able to have it on hand when I need it and just pull it out of the freezer on a busy morning.
How long does buttermilk syrup last?
Homemade buttermilk syrup lasts for a few weeks in the fridge…sometimes longer.
Can you freeze buttermilk syrup?
Yes, you can freeze buttermilk syrup. We love to make a big batch and freeze some of it for using later. It warms up in the microwave or in a saucepan on the stove top.
