Our big magnetic calendar for our home.
In 2004, I went through a phase, a wood crafting phase. I made this calendar just after Avery’s first birthday.
I first fell in love with a mirror that my mom had custom made from a company called Sticks. While visiting one of the Sticks Galleries in CA (Balboa Island to be exact) I saw one of their perpetual calendars and LOVED it, the only problem was that the price tag was waaaay out of my league. So when we got back from our trip, I decided to make one myself… and I did!
I used a local wood crafting business to make the actual frame and then I did the rest. With:
-chalkboard paint
-craft paint
-a sander
-a wood burner
-a love for papyrus and comic sans ☺ (what?! It was 2004.)
-and three nonstop weeks (I was on a mission)
it was complete… and I love it! I love that it is something that I made and that we can have for years and pass on to our children.
What took the most time was not the actual frame, but all the magnets: the big ones for the months, medium ones for the holidays and major birthdays and small ones for all the numbered days. It would have been a lot less of a project to make a mirror, but I’m glad I made a calendar. I mainly use it for major holidays and birthdays.
Here is a picture half way finished from 5 years ago.
..and what it looks like today.
If you’re new to Sticks as a company, you should check out their site, they have so many neat pieces!
That is so stinkin’ cute… you’re amazing! *Ü*
I have always loved that calendar (and your mom’s mirror) . I can’t believe you made it all by yourself. I use to tell Brett that I wanted to “make a calendar like Kami’s” but needed his help That’s why it never got done:)
When is the Kami B DIY show going to hit the airwaves??? My DVR is ready! Plus, I want to be one of those clumsy guests that spills glue and stuff while you try to teach me how to do the project.
That is so cool!!!
I remember how much time it took. You have always had a huge “determination” gene also. We all love that calendar.
what a nice piece to enjoy.
and what a lot of work.
so worth it though.
I remember the first time I was at your house and saw that I told you I would pay you to make me one. You just laughed and said ‘not enough’. haha. But the offer still stands 🙂
Amazing!
ooooh– i love that!!! amazing!
That’s amazing! You are so talented and ambitious Kami! There is no way in the WORLD I would take that on:o)
Holy cow. I for sure didn’t get the DIY-er gene. Wow!
Yours is way cuter than the ‘professional’ ones!
we could really use someone like you on our enrichment committee! you’re so good at this stuff! i wouldn’t even know where to start.
OK. Now I’m convinced that you are super woman. Is there anything you can’t do?
WOW! That calendar is darling, I love it!
That calendar is so awesome! I am sure a lot of time and work went into it but it definitely paid off. It’s beautiful! And what a wonderful family heirloom to pass down to your children. Love it!
That is so fantastic! Something the kids (& your grandkids!) will cherish and remember forever.
Bet you look forward to putting up a new month!
Just love it.
Wow – I love it! That is really cool!
XOXO
Jen
PS – love your header!
I love it so much! Totally up my alley! And I love wood burners (not sure why…) It sounds like such a fun project. You are so talented!
That is so cute! Very impressive that you made that. I don’t think I could do it, let alone even know where to begin.
oh my goodness, nice work!! it’s so beautiful!! i love all the color and all the cute phrases!
That is truly a work of art! I covet it everytime I see it. So many hours obviously went into that – something you will always treasure and be enjoyed by many.
That’s it! You’re officially A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.! So impressed by you and your crazy crafting skills…
Love Sticks… just wish they fit into my budget a bit better.
I remember bumming off that craft phase with you for a while! Actually, I just re-painted my magnet board I made with you from green to red. Some of the green shows through and looks really antique and cool!
Anyway, those were the days!
🙂
are you kidding me?! You are so stinkin crafty! I could never begin to put together something so magical. good job!
Love it! You crafter you!
Yours is better than theirs! Way to go you crafty lady you!!
Martha Stewart has nothing on you. That is beautiful!
hi, I am stopping in to say hi (just like your profile suggests!) I absolutely love this idea, and am stealing the idea for a gift for my mother. Her old wipe off calendar on the fridge is so worn. Thanks Kami. By the way, I saw your blog through Adrian, we went to middle school together. -Jennie
oh did I mention, I love your whole blog! Your photos are fantastic!
AWESOME is all I can say! You are amazing! I LOVE it!
why am i not shocked that kami decided to harness the ‘diy’ gene and rock the calendar? i love it–it’s quite a feat to have under your belt. that’s not your ordinary homemaking (old school term) craft!
what’s the word on killers? call me in the next few and we will chat!
LOVE this calendar!! I thought I already commented on it but I guess I hadn’t. I like yours WAY better than any of the ones you linked to! So cute and lots of fun! I admire your ambition and drive to get it done! How fun to have a one and only made by you!
Whatever you do, don’t tell Kelly that you like Papyrus. Being in the printing business, he is a font snob. Whenever someone uses Papyrus, he says “Ring ring. Hello? Oh it’s 2003. They want their Papyrus back.” See? Snob.
Well done!
I love, love, love Sticks and this is one amazing knock-off. The patience this must have taken. I love that the separate number pieces make this renewable.
