Our Calendar

About five years ago, I went through a phase, a wood crafting phase. I made this calendar just after Avery’s first birthday. I first fell in love with a mirror (similar to this one)that my mom had custom made from a company called Sticks. While visiting one of Sticks galleries in CA (Balboa Island to be exact) I saw one of their perpetual calendars (similar to this one) that I loved, the only problem was that the price tag was waaaay out of my league. So when we got back from our trip, I decided to make one myself… and I did (that dang DIY-er gene).

I used a local wood crafting business to make the actual frame and then I did the rest. With:
-chalkboard paint
-craft paint
-a sander
-a wood burner
-a love for papyrus and comic sans (what?! It was 2004.)
-and three nonstop weeks (I was on a mission)
it was complete… and I love it! I love that it is something that I made and that we can have for years and pass on to our children.

What took the most time was not the actual frame, but all the magnets: the big ones for the months, medium ones for the holidays and major birthdays and small ones for all the numbered days. It would have been a lot less of a project to make a mirror, but I’m glad I made a calendar. I mainly use it for major holidays and birthdays.

Here is a picture half way finished from 5 years ago.

And here is a picture of what it looks like today.

If you are new to Sticks, you should check out their catalog, it has so many neat pieces.

I have always loved that calendar (and your mom’s mirror) . I can’t believe you made it all by yourself. I use to tell Brett that I wanted to “make a calendar like Kami’s” but needed his help That’s why it never got done:)

I remember bumming off that craft phase with you for a while! Actually, I just re-painted my magnet board I made with you from green to red. Some of the green shows through and looks really antique and cool!

Whatever you do, don’t tell Kelly that you like Papyrus. Being in the printing business, he is a font snob. Whenever someone uses Papyrus, he says “Ring ring. Hello? Oh it’s 2003. They want their Papyrus back.” See? Snob.
