Thrifty Thursday: Credenza (before)

I wish I had a before and after to show today, but I don’t. Just the before. I found this credenza (I think that’s what you’d call it) at Savers for 50 bucks. I love the height of it. If I stand next to it, it hits me right above the hip. My favorite thing about it is the paneling. Now I just need to decide what color to paint it: white, black or turquoise. What do you think?!

Don’t you love the word credenza? I feel all grown up and sophisticated when I say it. Kinda like how my Grandma refers to the couch as a ‘davenport’. (funny)

How about you, any fun thrifty finds lately?

ooh! What a fabulous find!!! I vote Black.

  2. 2

oh my gosh did you really just say davenport?….forever that word will make me think of my grandma – my dad's mom….davenport – WOW!

  3. 3

i think i'd have to vote turquoise, with white as a close second. I think it will really make the credenza pop!

    great find!

  4. 4

Now THAT is amazing. I think it would look great in turquoise (or orange or red), but I fear that the detail would get lost in black.

I'll have to sit on my davenport for a while and stew on your credenza.

I'm going to be saying davenport all day now. Thank you.

That is definitely supposed to be a turquoise credenza. I mean, for the literary effect alone, it must be turquoise. "Black credenza" just doesn't have the same ring to it that you get with "turquoise credenza". Say it out loud, you'll see what I mean.

    Oh man!! LUCKY!

    oH, YES! The Davenport!

  8. 8

What does Davenport mean? A port for your daven? What is a daven?

    Stay with wood and refinish?

Lucky girl! My first vote goes to turquoise then to white.

  10. 10

Fabulous. Love the curves and detail on the front. I would go with white or turquoise, but I'm no expert.

  11. 11

I sort of like Mom's idea of just refinish but new hardware also. Love that Grandma has always called it a Davenport.

  12. 12

I'm dieing over the credenza–if for some crazy reason you decide you don't need it, I will buy it from you at double the price :) Just thought I'd put it out there… Oh, and I think turquoise is the color, for sure–or a yellow with a glaze over top.

My vote is for turquoise. You have such lucky finds!

  14. 14

Gorgeous! I wish I had found that, I can't wait to see the after.

    Becky, yep says:

I'm with my people. We must be purists. I think you'll lose those beautiful panels completely if you repaint the whole thing.

And if you do and it gets ruined…I'll pay you $51 for it!!!!!!!
    and lots more !'s

Infact, I'll take it as payment for watching your kids! WooHoo!

seriously this is your best find yet, I think you need to make it a real statement piece, I'd go with turquoise or lime green. I did a turquoise smaller cabinet and I loved the results.

  17. 17

Oh wow! I seriously love that find! I think it would look so pretty just refinished in that same wood tone (that would be a lot of work). My second vote would be white with a grey tone runner and some yellow flowers or vases on top. I can't wait to see the finished product!

    I have thrift envy!
    That is amazing, Kami.
Turquoise for sure. That beauty needs to pop.

Can't wait to see the after!

Nice find, I love it. Turquoise all the way! I wish you could go to the thrift store with me. I almost never find anything cool!

  20. 20

I saw that "credenza" and thought turquoise/Tiffany Blue even before I scrolled down to see it was one of your choices.
Can't wait to see what you do with it.
    or orange?

  21. 21

I vote turquoise over black, sanded up a bit to show the texture.

I have been casing my local DI for a nightstand of late. Just love painting an old piece of furniture and feeling like an artist!

Good luck and be sure to post after pics!

If you want drama, I would go black with an accent color on the decorative paneling such as white,or red.

  23. 23

What about using different colors for the body and the paneling? Either white body with turquoise paneling, or turquoise body with white paneling? Or maybe something with less contrast, but still enough contrast to allow the paneling to stand out – like a two-tone turquoise with the paneling being a little darker shade of turquoise?

  24. 24

I'm normally a boring "paint it black" girl but I'm thinking for that super fun piece of furniture you need to go turquoise!

    Marianne & Clayton says:

Ooh! That is such a great find! I adore the copper-ish hardware, so I would vote turquoise first and white second just to show them off. But I paint everything black, so what do I know. Can. not. wait. to see the results.

  26. 26

Such a great piece! If this isn't too bold to ask, we'd love (love!) to feature the before/after transformation at BLOOM. ??

    good luck with the painting!

    Petit Elefant says:

Can you imagine it in turquoise?! THAT would be fabulous.

    elizabeth kartchner says:

I would gladly take that off your hands!! :)

  29. 29

i LOVE it! I would have payed quadruple that amount for it. You know how hard good credenzas (hee hee) are to find? I don't know about the color…turquoise sounds fabulous and it sounds like YOU.

  30. 30

What a unique piece! Can't wait to see it made over!
