Make a Shamrock Shake at home!
Who needs Mickey Dee’s when you can make a shamrock shake at home. Vanilla ice cream, milk and mint flavor blended together to the perfect creamy consistency. You really can make this shake year round, no need to wait for St. Patty’s Day, although it’s fun to enjoy all the festive green food on. We are all about all the traditional holiday foods for St. Patrick’s Day, like corned beef and cabbage, green milk and lucky charms.
McDonald’s Shamrock Shake:
Here’s the copycat recipe for McDonald’s Shamrock Shake. Vanilla ice cream, milk, green food coloring and mint flavor combined for a delicious creamy treat. Top with whipped cream, sprinkles and a cherry on top for the full experience.
Ingredients:
- 3 cups vanilla ice cream
- 1 cup whole milk
- 10 drops green food coloring
- 1/4 teaspoon mint extract
- whipped cream,
- green sprinkles
- maraschino cherries with stems
How to make the McDonald’s shamrock shake:
In a large bowl add the ice cream, milk, food coloring and mint flavor.
Mash with a potato masher or meat chopper until desired consistency and color.
*Optional: you can also use a blender if you choose to blend the shake together.
Variations:
Don’t want to mess with food coloring? Here are some easy alternatives:
- Try using green mint milk that is often available during the month of march of St. Patrick’s Day.
- Similar to the Oreo Shamrock McFlurry, use mint Oreo ice cream (or mint chocolate chip ice cream) to make a mint Oreo shamrock shake.
- If you choose to flavor your green shamrock shake mint flavor, make sure it’s regular mint extract and not peppermint extract. If you only have peppermint extract, it will still be good, it will just taste more like a candy cane.
Ingredients
- 3 cups vanilla ice cream
- 1 cup whole milk
- 10 drops green food coloring
- 1/4 teaspoon mint extract (not peppermint)
- whipped cream
- green sprinkles
- maraschino cherries with stems
Instructions
-
In a large bowl add the ice cream, milk, food coloring and mint flavor. Mash with a potato masher or meat chopper until desired consistency and color.
-
*Optional: you can also use a blender if you choose to blend the shake together.
-
Top with a squirt of whipped cream, sprinkles and a maraschino cherry on top.

What does a Shamrock Shake taste like?
The festive drink from McDonald’s mostly tastes like a vanilla shake with hints of mint flavor. When you make the shake at home, you can make it more or less minty …however you like it!
How long is the McDonald’s Shamrock Shake Available?
This classic green mint milk shake is only available for 5 weeks at McDonalds. It usually becomes available mid-February and stays on the menu until after St. Patrick’s Day (March 17th). When it’s so easy to make at home, you don’t need to worry that it’s only for sale for a few short weeks, because you can make it whenever you want!
Is the Shamrock Shake bad for you?
A small 12oz. Shamrock Shake is 530 calories, 15 grams of fat and 73 grams of sugar. The 12oz. shake is the small option. Another reason to make it at home so you can choose your portion and share with with family and friends.

the mint chip would actually turn the shake a bit brownish, mostly because of the chips, but still a much easier way than using the food coloring! I LOVE ice cream,I mean really LOVE IT! I’m totally making a green shake for St. Patty’s day.
