actually lots of words. A few weeks back, my blog buddy and fabulous fotog Bethany did this post: Blogger 101, and I thought it was such a helpful post. I learned a bunch of new tricks (thank you Bethany!!), so I thought it would be fun to highlight her post here and share a few more things that have helped me...with you, the bloggers in my bloggerhood.
1. Add this gadget ☟ to your side bar...
and then do it yourself. I think it is helpful to subscribe to your own blog because then you can see it how everyone else sees it. Also...subscribe to your comments. That way if someone comments on an older post, you won't miss it. I prefer to have these come through google reader rather than through my email, leaving my email wide open for all the junk stuff my mom and little brother send me. ☺
#2 Speaking of Email...I think it is a good idea to add your email address to your blogger profile and a blog button to your sidebar. Sometimes people would rather ask a question or say something in private. I am more likely to answer a question through an email rather than here on my blog, because I'm not sure if they will ever check back. (If you have ever asked me a question in a comment, and I haven't answered you (sorry), just send me an email).
Your email button can be any image that you want. I am loving Bethany's email me button in their 'stumes'...too cute! To make an email button, find the image you want for the button and add it to your side bar as an image. Instead of linking the image to a website, link it to your email by adding...mailto:your email address here.
#3 To see how many subscribers your blog has in google reader, Click on Show Details. This was a new one to me (thanks Bethany!)
#4 Also new to me was tagging posts in Google Reader...life changing I tell you. Until now, I had been starring every post that I liked, filling up my starred folder. Now everything is tagged in an organized manner (just how I like it)☺. Now when Valentine's Day rolls around next year (and you know it will be here again before you know it), I will have lots of inspiration to go to.
I think I tagged almost all of my blog buddy Amy's Valentine's posts this year, like this one and this one and I was ooohing over this one, if only I could sew (dangit!).
#5 Google Analytics...it's a neat thing, if only to peek in once in a while to see that your favorite Aunt Laurie (sorry Lisa) is pooping popping in to check on her favorite niece now and then.☺
#6 Music on blogs: If you happen to have a music player on your blog, and it is playing, I think it is a nice thing to have the player up high on your sidebar so that your readers don't have to scroll all the way down to the bottom to turn it off (because that is what most of us do). Also...if it still happens to be playing Bubbly by Colbie Caillat...for the love!
#7 Just a thought for all my 'private friends'...I would LOVE to get an email from you letting me know that you have updated your blog (just like google reader updates me on my non-secretive blog friends) . Even if I am not able to comment on everything, it is great to know that you are still active and that I won't be wasting my time by clicking over to your Christmas Recap (once again).
#8 Don't list people by their full names on your sidebar or even by their last names for that matter.
#9 A tip for the Newbies: If you do a link word on your post to another blog post, remember to link just the post, and not the entire blog.
#10 If you are a writer (and by writer I mean you are asking me to read a lot of words), I think it is helpful to bold key words or make them large or red (please, just not yellow). That way I can see right away what it is that you are thankful for on Thursday.☺
Some posts to note:
-1 I liked what Elise had to say here about blogging.
-2 I could not agree more with Hannah on her blog pet peeve.
-3 And I loved what my girl Mindi had to say about commenting on blogs and just her plain old thoughts on blogging too.
Now it's your turn...to spill'em. Any good tips that you want to share? I would love to hear them!
ps. See you next week with a post all about Facebook tips...aka 'blog lite'. Don'tcha just love being on a diet?! ☺
pps. Don't forget to read all the comments on all these blog posts that I linked...that is where all the good stuff is!

Just a pet peeve of mine...blogs with small print and a background, especially black, that make a blog hard to read. I can't do it...I won't even bother. I think clean designs without any of the fancy scrapbook stuff that takes a long time to load are the best. I also hate lots of ads...I won't read the blog if it's out to make money and not personal. Just my preferences.
Love this post...what a good idea!
Also, Kami, I fixed that annoying problem in setting up my new blog to Google Reader. It was just too new for them to find it...after trying to fix it for HOURS, it just worked after awhile! So try again!
Thank you for addressing the music player issue. They make the page take FOREVER to load and usually have music I don't like.
I agree with Sarah about fonts and colors. If it makes my eyes hurt, I will move on. Also with the free backgrounds... make sure your text isn't overlapping because I can't read through flowers.
I also suggest setting your comments so there are no anonymous comments and adding word verification. It gets rid of people who think being rude/anonymous is fun and lowers the chances of having spam comments.
Wow, those are great tips. Thanks!
thanks kami and i enjoyed the links to the other bloggers and posts as well.
i still am learning even after a few years of this.
i don't know how to make an e-mail button, even though somehow i managed to creat an e-mail link on my side bar, don't ask me how.
and also, what is the new thing i am seeing at the bottome of posts that says "links to this post" and then has other bloggers and stuff down there?
anyway, thanks for this and all your help all of the time.
btw are you coming to the lunch get together on saturday? i don't know the pulsipher girl, really, at all, but i might pop in anyway.
Don't let your husband upload all the pictures to his laptop that he has with him at all times! You'll simply NEVER get access to them and therefore, will end up about three months behind on blogging. Oh, and don't move. It will also make you behind!
I love all your tips! Thanks! I especially like #8!
Thank you for all the tips. I was actually just about to email you about the google reader stuff because I couldn't remember what you told me last week :)
Did you do this to cut back on my phone calls? ;-)
And AMEN on the Bubbly! Thanks for saying it out loud :-)
Thanks Kami! I LOVE this post!!! I ditto EVERY tip here! With you on the music thing and LOVE you for showing me the tag thing. I'm all over that! Thanks! Love your header! SO fun!
Love this post! I'm going to add my email just for you. But if I start getting tons of spam, it's gonzo!
I don't read private blogs period. Or I should say very rarely and I really really really have to like you in order make the effort to click over to your blog. I'm just saying.
Number 8!! For the love!
I've had to change URL's because of first name-last name linkage...shockingly, I don't want to be googleable.
Great suggestions.
xox
LOVE YOU! I am so glad you did this, I've learned so much since I posted and I love my blog so much more than I used to! I've really enjoyed reading my comments in reader. AND I haven't had a single spam comment since I took word verification off my blog, it has worked great, I love it. Oh and the last name tip is SO vital. I still highly recommend using Firefox only (at least for pc users), getting Feedburner (which is now owned by google!), keeping the search bar on your blog (or adding a new one), and as always, remembering to leave your friends a comment or two! Thanks Kami, this is the greatest!
thanks for the tips and cool blog links...
i really think bubbly is on my playlist still :O haha!
someday i will be lucky enough to make it on the no biggie blog... in my dreams.
Love the tips - going to implement some of them right......NOW
Thanks...
Nice tips, thank you! Don't be mad but I'm probably not going to be e-mailing anyone when I post on my super secret blog. :) Just know that I suck at posting so check back once a week or so.
Fantastic ideas! You are the queen! I'm still waiting for your TV show...
Super fantastic tips.
Appreciate it :)
thanks lady! who knew it was so easy.
Way to go! you left out how to make your pictures big! How the heck do you do that?
Thanks Kami! BUT, I still like Bubbly...it's a family favorite. My kids like it :) It's stayin'!!
I do want to know how you get your pics so big!
Thanks Ladies!
Sheila - to make an email button, find the image you want for the button and add it to your side bar as an image. Instead of linking the image to a website, link it to your email by adding...mailto:your email address here.
Karen & Crystal...about making your pictures big, my friend Liz (and Scrapbook Royalty :)) shares the how to right here. Good Luck!
this upsets me ONLY as i have been planning to put my music back on 'auto start' and was gonna have ONLY 'BUBBLY' playing. on REPEAT.
once again, this is why i bow to you. i always feel like you make it so easy to do it--that's a gift, my young bff. cherish it!
I think people shouldn't have music on their blogs, period! Because you can't read and listen to music at the same time. Which means I always have to mute my computer. And then unmute it to watch video clips, then mute it again for someone else's blog. Keep the music on myspace, people!
Also, I agree with whoever said it's a pet peeve to have crazy patterns behind the text area. SO hard to read!
Thanks for the tips. (p.s. I sometimes link to a blog not a post if I want to just highlight the person, not a specific post. Hope that's OK.)
*Huge* Fan of your blog (I'm Marriot Jane's little sister Katie). My favorite post of late has to be "I make cards." =)
Quick question about this post, if you don't mind my bothering you...
I'm interested in #3 but can't figure out how to get to the "Show Details" link. Which step comes before that?
ThAnK you!! katiedana - at - hotmail - dot - com
Even though I've been doing this a while I thought these tips were super helpful! Thanks!

xo. marta
