Go Green Giveaway

In honor of Green Day and Earth Month in April (thanks Logan) just around the corner, I wanted to challenge myself to go a little more green. Then I thought, Hey, why not challenge bloggers and blurkers alike. We all share this beautiful planet, so let’s work together.
So here is the giveaway.

To win this cute box of 25 different cupcake recipe cards, just leave a comment on this post between now and Sunday March 16th at 10 p.m. I will announce the winner on Green Day itself (Monday March 17th).

Here is the challenge, if you post on your blog between now and Sunday March 16th at least one simple goal (more if you would like) of something you will change or something you will do to go a little more green. Then you can come back and comment a second time (telling me what you committed to) to up your chances to win. No anonymous comments will count. You can only comment twice.

Here are the things that I will commit to:
Turn the water off in the shower when I shave my legs.
Slow down when I drive to conserve gas.
Walk to church (that is a big one for me, especially when I am wearing heels).
Continue to recycle
Use my cloth shopping bags (my new favorites are from Albertsons for 1$, they are the perfect size. I have four of them).

Here are some more ideas to get you going. On Monday, the winner could just be Lucky You!

I should get extra bonus points toward the prize for being the first to comment.

I’ve been trying to drive slower to save gas. It’s really hard. I will consider this a re-motivation to my efforts (o:

what a great challenge! I’ve been thinking about blogging about this. I’m impressed with your idea to turn off the water when you shave your legs. Not sure I can commit to that until the weather warms up – still too chilly in the morning here for that!

    Copied from my post:
I resolve to help our environment:
    1. Don’t smoke, drink or use drugs ;)
    2. Continue recycling ALL recyclable materials I use.
    3. Use only cold water for washing clothes and other things (besides my own body. Sorry, I’m not THAT green yet!)
    4. Buy re-usable shopping bags. (A dual positive since I HATE my accumulating pile of Target bags)
    5. Grow our vegetables in our own garden (It’s coming along quite nicely BTW- thanks to Dan!)
    6. Majorly limit fast food consumption (Most fast food is overpackaged and most fast-food companies are responsible for producing mountains of trash. By avoiding fast food whenever possible, you’ll help reduce this needless waste.)
    7. Replace our light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs when they burn out (and recycle the used bulb.)
    8. Continue not using aerosols.
    9. Pick up all litter on our walks.
    10. Live by the light of open blinds until 6:00pm.

Hey, did I start this whole idea of posting about earth month? go me! I am going to try to be better at recycling (we don’t have a recycling pick up service in our complex), and driving slower. I want to start using cloth bags, but how many do you need? It seems like every time I go grocery shopping I fill my entire cart to the top, and I feel like I would have to take a dozen or more to fit all the crap in.

We are trying to “go green” as much as we can at our house too! We get sooo much junk mail and so we are recycling that and our plastic too. We are in the process of switching out our lightblubls now. Great post!

Your own daughter followed her grandpa into the kitchen when he left the TV to get a snack. She said,

And one more comment, just ’cause you said we could do two if we blogged about greenday……..we are also going on a FISCAL FAST for a week (not spending ANY MONEY) to help reduce consumption of cans, bags, and boxes. :) Try it…its amazing how much you can do without spending money! :)

I really am obsessed with recycling. I used to make fun of my mom because on family vacations she would gather all the recyclables and take a huge garbage sack full home so that she could recycle them. She has passed that obsession on to me. I will for sure do what you suggested. Thanks for the good tips. It’s fun feeling like we can contribute in our own small ways.

Great idea Kami, way to do your part. I will commit to turn off the shower when I shave as well. I had never thought of that one. You are so smart. Does kissing up to the give-a-way host help my chances??

I want to start being a Freegan. Root through grocery store and restaurant’s garbage cans for good items they’ve thrown out. Did you see that on Cobra (Oprah)? YUCK! I need to think of some green ideas. I’ll be back!

What a neat post to help us remember to love the world! I think the number one way I can start doing better is to teach my kids more about reduce, reuse, recycle. Thanks for the reminder.

    Linda says:

Hi kami it’s Lisa’s lil sister Linda. I absolutely love your blog and check it pretty much every single day! As for the Go green thing my first one is to always let my hands air dry after washing them instead of using paper towel or wasting energy using and air dryer ooh and also I will let my hair air dry more often instead of a blow dryer!

  29. 29
    Linda says:

For my number two I am going to walk my son Tayson to his preschool and walk to pick him up everyday the weather is nice enough. That is big for me cause its about 2 miles each way and I drive my boyfriends big diesel truck which I don’t think is quite a hybrid! This is a really good idea cause when I start thinking of it there are so many things I could do differently to become more “green”

Okay, this is my 2nd post. I’ve put my goals on my blog. It’s interesting to see what people are already doing to help the earth. I feel a little behind, I know we could do more as a family. Stopping to think and make a committment about it is something I would not have done on my own – thanks!

Cory and I have decided to do our part to conserve water by showering together. Someone’s gotta do it, so we’ll step up to the plate. Cory has also decided to turn his underpants inside out after a day of use to conserve on laundry, what a guy! Don’t worry we’ll burn the pants, wait that’s not good for the environment…

    The Roberts Family says:

Okay let’s just say the above post was um…less than mature. We really like your idea and ever since we moved to Austin we have been really recycle/eco friendly. It helps that they pick up your recylced goods from the curb. We have switched to green laundry detergent and now I am cleaning with Vinegar, not Cory’s fav. Tonight I decided to save some plastic bags and store our leftovers in multiple containers. I also ordered a free litter bag for our car! We’re en fuego! Thanks for helping us all become more aware!
